Note: These rankings are based on unrounded totals which virtually eliminates ties between players or teams.

* The only team with a Top 10 offense and a Top 10 defense per Total Points is the Jaguars, who rank 4th in the former and 10th in the latter. The Ravens (3rd and 11th, respectively) just miss.

* Every team in the Top 10 in our Total Points Per Play leaderboard is either 4-0 or 3-1 except for the 1-3 Jets, who rank 10th overall. Despite the losing record, the Jets have the 9th-best offense and 15th-best defense.

* The unbeaten 49ers rank 7th overall in Total Points Per Play. They have the No. 1 offense but the No. 26 defense, one whose pass rush ranks 30th.

* Dak Prescott’s solid game against the Texans pushed him to the top spot among quarterbacks in Total Points (he ranked 6th entering Week 4). It’s close at the top with three quarterbacks within 4 points of the lead. The 17 completions that Prescott threw to CeeDee Lamb put Lamb in the top spot among receivers, just ahead of Mike Evans.

* As has often been the case, the leaders in Total Points among tight ends are Travis Kelce (14) and George Kittle (13), though Kittle holds the edge on a per-60-snaps basis, 5.1 to 4.3.

* Greg Rousseau continues to have a monster year for the Bills and maintained his hold as the leading linebacker in Total Points. Dallas Turner jumped from 5th place to 2nd with a strong week for the Vikings. As you’ll see below they rank at the top of the leaderboard for both pressures and pressures above expectations too.

* We added some leaderboards to the PDF and are highlighting a couple of them here. One is completion percentage above expectation. Lamar Jackson is the leader. His expected completion percentage, based on the factors in our calculation (throw depth and direction among them), is close to 63%. His actual completion percentage is 71%. Thus, he’s 8% above expectation (71%-63%).

The PDF document also includes the leaders in on-target percentage above expectation. Caleb Williams leads in that stat, +8%.

* The other stat we added is contested catches, which credits receivers for making catches in situations in which a defensive player is within arm’s length of them. Garrett Wilson and CeeDee Lamb have 9 to lead the way. Wilson has 9 catches on 12 pass attempts in which a potential catch was contested. The 75% completion percentage on those contested passes leads the NFL. Lamb has 9 on 17 attempts.

* Kenneth Walker III doesn’t just lead in yards after contact. He has 28 broken/missed tackles this season. The next-closest player is Jahmyr Gibbs with 18.

Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week. The Total Points PDF has this for each game in the NFL in a given week.

You can also find much of this information at our subscripton site, SIS DataHub Pro.

Here are some things we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

* 49ers-Seahawks should be a fantastic game. The 49ers rank 1st in Passing, Receiving, and Pass Blocking. The Seahawks are 1st in Run Defense, 3rd in Pass Blocking, and 5th in Pass Coverage. Good matchups abound. Keep an eye on the 49ers Run Defense (29th) and Pass Rush (30th).

* The Falcons best shot against the Ravens may be on the ground. Thanks to Bijan Robinson, Atlanta ranks 2nd in Rushing and the Falcons will try to expose Baltimore’s biggest weakness. The Ravens rank 31st in Run Defense.

* The Bears’ defense is very good. It ranks 4th in Run Defense, 4th in Pass Coverage, and 8th in Pass Rush. The Packers rank last in the NFL in rushing and aren’t in the top half of the league of any other offensive category.

* Likewise the Vikings could feast on the Saints. Minnesota has the 2nd-ranked Pass Rush and the Saints’ Pass Blocking ranks last in the NFL.
